Media language practical task

I had been tasked to work with a group of media students to produce a short video that would illustrate the following technical aspects of our chosen form.

  • Editing to the beat
  • Chorus of a song and lip sync using close up's and tracking shots.
  • Shallow depth of field
  • Pull focus
  • Whip pan
  • Tracking shot
  • Montage editing
  • Match on action
  • 180 degree rule with over the shoulder shots and shot reverse shot editing pattern.
  • Lighting that illuminates footage to high key standard.
  • Voice over (documentary)
  • Variety of shot angles and distance

This footage is an example of 180 degree rule with over the shoulder shot. I used this clip to demonstrate shot reverse shot during the editing of the practical task. This type of shot is generally used when two people are in conversation with each other, I tried to demonstrate this through the raw footage above.

This piece was used to illustrate Shallow depth of field. The purpose of this shot is to show the audience where the point of focus is in the shot. It signifies where people should  concentrate their attention to. I think I did a good job at creating the example of this particular technique.

This clip is a demonstration of a two shot with three point lighting. The two shot is a very common shot in music videos, especially collaborative ones. The two shot is used to compare the two characters to show if one is more superior than the other or that they are actually both equal.

The type of shot above is an example of pull focus. This is used to reveal something or someone to the audience which in turn helps to develop the narrative. This is because something significant might be introduced to the storyline.

This final cut of the practical task that me and my group put together is a moderately good representation of what we were tasked to do. I can see room for improvement though, but I do think that considering our minor knowledge of the equipment and software, it was an acceptable attempt to demonstrate the techniques in the list. The great thing about this task was that we have all gained the experience we need to begin producing our own music videos later on.
